5 Kitchen Hacks to Save You Time and Money

I’ve got 5 kitchen hacks that will not only save you time during this crazy holiday season but can also save you money!

1. Line a bowl with tin foil and pour your grease into the foil. Stick it in the fridge to solidify the oil and throw the tin foil away. You’ll save so much time (and not to mention a ton of dish soap) by not having to wash that greasy dish!

2. If you only need a few slices of bacon wrap up the rest of the bacon in small batches for future use. It will thaw faster and you won’t need to open up a new package of bacon just for a few strips.

Pull out a long piece of plastic wrap. Place a slice of bacon on the plastic wrap and roll it twice. Then add another strip and roll twice. Repeat the process for however many bacon slices you are including in a pack. I then wrap the whole thing in another layer of plastic wrap and write how many slices of bacon are in that bundle.

3. Don’t toss that leftover turkey carcass! Making your own turkey stock is SUPER simple with a slow cooker. Leave it for 10-12 hours and you’ll have lots of turkey stock on hand for the rest of the holiday cooking season.

Slow Cooker Turkey Stock

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 hours
Total Time: 10 hours 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 turkey carcass
  • 2 large onions quartered
  • 4 large carrots peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 stalks celery cut into chunks
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 Tbsp thyme
  • 1 Tbsp rosemary

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a large slow cooker. Add as much water as the slow cooker can hold filling until about 1/2 inch from the inner rim.
  • Cook on low for 10-12 hours.
  • Strain solids from the broth and pour broth into a large (or multiple) pitchers. If desired, skim fat when broth has cooled.
  • Use within 3-5 days or freeze in 2 cup batches for future use.

 4. Line a measuring cup with plastic wrap when measuring shortening. When you are done just toss the plastic wrap away!

5. I learned this from my aunt who learned it from her mom. If you end up with an empty muffin cup fill them with a couple spoonfuls of water to help the heat distribute evenly.

Just remember to carefully remove the muffin tin because there will water still in the cup.

  1. I loved those tips! I can honestly say I have never heard of any….except for the turkey stock. I especially like the muffin one because that happens to me quite a bit. Can’t wait to try the water trick.
